Food is public infrastructure.

Food is usually treated as a private transaction: bought, prepared and consumed behind separate doors. Yet every neighbourhood already depends on a spatial food system of growing, storage, movement, cooking, waste, care and exchange. The city makes these relationships indispensable while rendering most of them invisible.

Calling food public infrastructure changes the architectural question. The work is no longer to attach a decorative garden to a completed housing plan. It is to decide where food can be grown, shared, stored, cooked and composted; who can reach those spaces; and whether the system supports everyday life or quietly transfers more labour onto residents.

A productive landscape can be a route, meeting place, learning space and civic room at once. Housing can participate through useful thresholds: a shared table near the street, storage close to cultivation, a kitchen that can host collective work, or a waste loop that is easy enough to maintain. These are spatial relationships, not lifestyle imagery.

Food Park organises a neighbourhood through those relationships. It does not claim that one formal model can resolve food inequality. It asks architecture to expose dependencies that a conventional plan tends to hide, then make them available for public discussion and adjustment.

The position is simple: feeding a neighbourhood is already a collective spatial act. Design becomes public when it gives that act room, dignity and legibility—and when the people expected to sustain it can challenge how the system has been arranged. It must also recognise who has time, access and authority to use and maintain each shared resource.

Territorial resilience / Nishtha Gupta

Resilience is a metropolitan practice.

Coastal urbanisation is often narrated as a contest between fixed land and invading water. That image produces harder edges, isolated defences and a false promise that uncertainty can be engineered away. It also reduces resilience to the performance of a boundary while life across the wider territory continues to change.

A metropolis is already a living arrangement of water, ground, infrastructure, ecology and settlement. A decision upstream alters a neighbourhood downstream; a transport line changes the pressure on housing; a new edge rearranges habitats and risk. Resilience begins when these systems are read together rather than divided into separate technical packages.

Working at the metropolitan scale does not mean imposing one total plan. It means tracing dependencies across scales, testing how a design responds to changing conditions and identifying where adaptation remains possible. The designer's task is to build a shared view of those relationships without pretending that a model can remove political choices.

The value of computational design is therefore not a more complex image. It is the capacity to compare scenarios, reveal feedback and make the consequences of one move visible elsewhere. A model becomes publicly useful only when its assumptions can be inspected and its conclusions can be questioned.

Resilient Metropoles develops this position as a team study across coastal territory, growth and urban form. Its public consequence is methodological: resilience should not arrive as a finished object delivered to a city. It should operate as an ongoing metropolitan practice through which knowledge, risk and possible futures can be examined together.

Cultivated matter / Hemant Jindal

Cultivation is fabrication.

Manufacturing usually begins with a material that is cut, pressed or assembled into a predetermined form. Cultivation begins from a different fact: living and semi-living materials already grow, shrink, bind, respond and fail. Their behaviour is not noise around the design process. It is the process.

The architect's role consequently shifts from specifying a finished surface to organising conditions. Nutrient, humidity, scaffold, duration, drying and rehydration become design variables. Form emerges through feedback between those variables and the material rather than through the one-way execution of a drawing.

That change makes failure productive. A sheet that tears at a frame, shrinks unevenly or loses translucency is not merely a rejected specimen. It identifies a limit, a dependency or a new path of assembly. Recording those events produces a more credible material culture than selecting only the most seductive outcome.

Skin Machine tests this approach through bacterial cellulose. Its archive moves from cultivation to binding, deformation and a larger machine study. The work demonstrates observed behaviours and experimental assemblies; it does not certify a construction product. The findings describe material experiments, not verified building performance.

Cultivated matter becomes architecturally meaningful through an open testing culture. Protocol, specimen, failure and next test must travel with the image so possibility is not confused with performance. This demands patience as a design competency: the time of growth cannot be treated as a delay before the real work begins. Fabrication then becomes less an act of command and more a disciplined negotiation with growth.
